FUCK WD 500 gigs of data out the windows due to horrible heat elimination, even witha ghetto ass fan rigged up it still heat colored the metal casing, fuckign pathetic.

The worst thing about it? It tips over on a dime, and if you unplug it before windows will allow you to remove it (which happens many times because it causes an error in explorer) it will start to degrade all your data.

AWFUL product. POS doesn't begin to cover it. Designers should be punched in the face then beaten with ham.

I have the 750 GB And the fucking USB circuit broke off after four months! THEY STILL WONT REPLACE IT and its under warranty.

I have a 1TB drive and have seen similar problem. It is taking me 200minutes to copy a 400MB files over the router, and I am not even using wireless.

God knows what the heck WesternDigital is doing on the drive...I regret buying it.....

I have a passport 250, I didn't realize this but by default it doesn't copy autodesk files, I backed up my whole computer and got it re-imaged (erased and updated) only to realize that all of the drawings I have from my past two years of school were not on my passport, just empty folders. I now have to redraw everything or use sad old images for my portfolio.

I have a Mybook 500 and god knows I regret the purchase!!! It's an awful piece of shit and the guys responsible for this deserve a beating!

Always hated WD drives, but this is the worst I've barely used my MyBook 500 and now just when I need to restore something can't get the POS to spin up. Never Never Never buy anything from WD!

I have gone threw 2 of the 500gb MyBooks. I think they are made out of crystal inside or something. They fail to power up after a few months. Even if you place them somewhere safe where they never topple and have adequate ventilation. Good morning all your data is gone, for no reason. They should come in two packs. One to back up the other which will enviably fail. Least reliable electronic device i have ever owned. i have crap from the 80's that still runs. These last 6 months.

mine fucking wont get recognized. at all. it turns on and the led lights up but nothing. 320 gigs gone. all my music. gone. fuck you western digital.

I'll chime in here too just to vent. In fact, a vent, and a fan would have been a good idea on the WD MyBook but it is obvious that WD doesn't want these things to last very long. I've had one enclosure die but the drive was still functioning (barely) after I ripped it out of the little cooker box they put it in. At least I didn't lose much data from that one. Another one (500GB) was getting hot and shutting off if I tried copying more than 50GB at a time. Also, the eSATA plug hole isn't big enough to accommodate most eSATA cables. Something in the drive/electronics limits it to about 1/3 of what USB 2.0 can do. The same computer transfers data 3x as fast using a cheap $30 enclosure. NEVER AGAIN. WD used to be worth buying over a no-name brand but their drives and especially their MyBook external drives are 100% garbage any more. I wouldn't stop at simply not recommending these worthless products. I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST these unless you just like spending all your time trying to get your data back from a @#$%^ failing drive. I could understand the high probability that these MyBook external hard drives will lose data if the product served _any_ _other_ _purpose_ at all, but the one and only reason this product exists is supposed to be to reliably STORE DATA, and it FAILS TO PERFORM its single, solitary, sole function. To me, that means the WD company needs to cease to exist. DO NOT BUY.

I have a WD My Book 1TB and have been using it for 6 months. Then one day, heard a loud 'snap' like sound. Turns out to be the adapter had blown itself.

I bought a TB drive and backed up my files after converting it from fat32. i didn't use its software and just used it as an extra drive to back things up on. i used it for about a week and unplugged it and left it alone. now today i went to use it and it will not power up. all that is does is flash the blue light for a second and you can hear it spin up and then shut down. it would not have been any different if i had just thrown the money in the garbage. except for the fact that i know how everyone else who has bought one of these feels

Stopped using my Mybook for about 3 months. Had it on my desk and did not even touch it for 3 months.

Now it does not work. Seriously. A product which self-destructs by not using it.

Do NOT buy this if you want a reliable hard drive.

WD passport is a worthless pile of crap.
I have a red 300-something GB. Who cares what size it is, it does NOT WORK worth a flying shit!!!! That is such a shame and a waste of money. Can't seem to get any assistance at all when the external hard drive fails completely. Western Digital blows.

I have a wd lifebook 1tb - bag of shit. Slow access. iTunes won't sync fully. Mionet shit. Taking all my data back and taking the sorry pile of steaming poo back to where I purchased it from. Not fit for purpose. Just shit for purpose. Beware don't make the same mistake.

After only 6 weeks all data lost on both drives. And also a lost Passwort ???

Don't buy this shit.

Yeah these things are garbage. Sometimes the disk decides to start spinning non-stop until I notice and turn the thing off, which could be hours or days as far as I can tell. Sometimes it decides not to respond or let me access my data. The firmware updater wouldn't recognize it and I just wasted an hour on that and have all my other usb stuff unplugged and a mess from trying. I have no confidence that any data I have on there is safe from corruption or drive failure. It's slow as molasses whether I use usb or firewire. It requires clunky WD software to be installed to even do anything!

And the worst thing about it? Whenever I open a file manager window or, for example, a "save as" dialog, or anything that has anything to do with files or disks - there is an extra 6 second delay while the stupid WD mybook spins up and does who knows what. This happens at bizarre times and is probably the biggest annoyance I have during my daily computing. COMPLETE GARBAGE!

WD piece-o-crap never worked right. Power Pak burned out promptly. WD does not stand behind their products as far as I can tell. I'll never buy another WD pc-o-crap.

Western Digital Mybooks are pieces of shit. 2 have died on me, luckily the second one that just died appears to be just the power board but who knows. How can you trust the drive now?

I have 1 more Mybook, its a 2TB Mybook studio. If that thing breaks, I will NEVER buy another fucking Western Digital external drive in my life. In fact, right now I dont plan to ever buy another one.

WD internal drives appear to be pretty good still, although they used to suck as bad as these Mybooks.

Never had such problems with external drives as with these Studio ones. Had three with e-Paper. Two of them died last week. They have been replaced with the new ones without e-Paper Display. And guess what, they don't even work with FW800 on my MacPro, had to use USB to even being able to see them. Tomorrow they go down the toilet. WD never ever again.

I wish i had read the comment on this sight before i bought this peice of SHIT My Book 1TB. It wont power up after 2 months. Family videos GONE. I Hate WD. We need to bring a class action lawsuit againts these fuckers.

I just bought a WD MyBook 2TB drive today. It was DOA. It was recognized once after trying to connect it several times but only for a moment. It completely died after being connected for a few minutes. Absolute garbage... Avoid WD products.
